We have recently released the second Alpha for Causelink Enterprise Version 2.0.  This internal Sologic release (North America and International Partners) is a significant milestone for our development team because all RCA chart and report functionality is now feature complete.  This means that anything having to do with creating and managing a root cause analysis can be completed in the browser.    Alpha 2 includes the creation of cause and effect charts, management of workflow steps and templates, and RCA versioning, including the capability to roll back to a previous version.

So, why are we calling this an Alpha 2 release instead of Beta?  Well, our Alpha 1 release in April 2014 included a fairly complete chart and very simple RCA report functionality.  As mentioned above, we completed the RCA section in Alpha 2, but we still have the rest of the application to build, including the dashboard page, management reports, and the administrative section.  The good news is that the features with the most risk, including the RCA chart, workflow templates, and versioning are now complete!   Once all features are complete and styled to match the new design, we will release our Beta version.  This is expected in August 2014.

The major components of the Alpha 2 release include;  

  • Cause and effect charting:  In addition to improved performance, we made many usability improvements to the charting feature as compared to the desktop software.  Adding and viewing cause details, such as solutions or evidence, has been re-designed and is much easier now.  Also, we made resolving chart quality items quicker and easier by adding hyperlinks to the alerts.  Finally, we made it easy to insert causes in front of a parent cause.  Overall, the new chart design is very clean and simple.
  • Workflow:  We improved the user interaction and provided the ability to configure/load different workflow templates.  Now you can adjust the workflow steps to better match your organizational needs and serve those up to your RCA teams.  
  • Sidebar:  Historically, sidebar interaction in our desktop software has been limited to dragging/dropping causes to and from the Cause Storage section of the sidebar.  Based upon user feedback, we have significantly expanded on this functionality by making it easy to add evidence, causes, solutions, notes, actions and attachments in the sidebar.  You can also drag/drop those records onto causes, providing an easy way to associate these records (evidence to causes, solutions to causes, etc.) to causes on the chart.  Its also a huge benefit during brainstorm sessions.
  • Versions:  We’ve found that oftentimes users like to take a snapshot of their RCAs before moving forward with changes.  In the desktop software, this was achieved with the duplicate and export features.  We made this much easier in Enterprise V2 by providing a way to create new versions of the same RCA.  We’ve also given you the ability to view the change log from past RCAS and revert back to those versions as needed.  
  • Attachments:  Users can now upload files, such as documents, images, or videos, and associate them to an RCA.  This is achieved through a file upload button or by simply dragging/dropping the file on to the attachments page.  Attachments can also be associated with Evidence records.
  • Report improvements:   By providing the ability to re-order report records, now its easy to put your favorite solutions, evidence, notes, etc.  on the top of the report pages.  Simply drag/drop any report record to change the display order.  Also, you can view the report pages in a simple list view, which is good for quick browsing, or detail view, which is the traditional way to view report pages.
As you can see, the Alpha 2 release of Causelink Enterprise provides a lot of new functionality, which our customers have been asking for.   In addition, by enabling drag/drop in various areas, now its easier than ever to add data and create associations in your RCA records.  Overall, the updated design and usability improvements leave us extremely proud of this release.  We look forward to your feedback as we release our Beta version to the public later this summer.  The production/Gold release is scheduled for October 2014.
