General Dwight D Eisenhower, one of the architects of the impossibly complex Normandy Landings and future President of the United States of America, was by any measure a master at converting data into effective plans.  So what did he mean when he said “In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless but planning is indispensable”.  Moreover, how does this relate to one of the central tenets of RCA?
 
The answer to this question is simple and, in fact, is rooted deep in the DNA of Root Cause Analysis.  More candidly, we might say there is as much value in the process as there is the outcome. Namely, by adopting the RCA process we quickly discover that effective data gathering alongside structured cause & effect analysis are highly valuable workouts for the brain.  A cognitive gym-session that results in a range of essential leadership skills, such as discipline under pressure, agility under threat and resilience in the face of fatigue.  
 
The 5 steps of the RCA method combine to produce a deep-rooted culture of effective problem solving.  Sologic RCA creates an environment wherein all voices are heard and difficult and often hidden issues are addressed, delivering consensus and engagement in teams.  Unsurprisingly Sologic RCA led teams become fully committed to the process, taking mutual responsibility for the outcomes of their analysis.  When solutions are generated they are therefore based on the team’s full understanding of the relationships between cause and effect.  RCA doesn’t force solutions or replace human judgement by making decision makers reliant on software and auto-generated solutions.  On the contrary, the number of solutions adopted depends directly upon team acumen.  Thus allowing extraordinary flexibility if, or when, circumstances change.  By embracing the entire RCA process leaders and their teams are able to maintain focus despite the fast-changing nature of their environment. So even though every good leader knows that “no plan survives first contact with the enemy” this should in no way deter us from planning.  To do so would miss the point of RCA as not just an effective process but as a culture in its own right.
